Dr. Carolina Solis-Herrera encourages people who are living with diabetes to have a plan in place during the coronavirus pandemic.

She said 80% of patients undergoing dialysis are dealing with complications that come from poorly controlled diabetes for a long period.

“During this time, they are not at more risk of getting COVID-19, but if they get it, the outcome is worse,” Solis-Herrera said.

She recommends that patients have a two to three month supply of medication and insulin. She also recommends a healthy diet and exercise.

She said UT Health San Antonio has taken extra measures to keep patients safe by transitioning to appointments done by phone or video conference.
