Drs. Jason Bowling and Barbara Taylor discuss the number of COVID-19 cases in San Antonio.

Dr. Bowling said the city could currently have a lower disease prevalence than other areas of the country, but it is likely there are people in the community with the virus, especially those who are not severely sick, who are missing from official counts.

He said those people are least likely to seek medical care but have a strong potential of infecting others.

Several health infectious disease experts agreed that the actual number of coronavirus cases in San Antonio is likely higher.

“It is definitely true that our current numbers are under-representative of the amount of COVID-19 that we have in our community,” said Dr. Taylor. “We know we have community spread, and we know that we don’t have widespread access to testing.”
