Dr. Ruth Berggren, director of UT Health’s Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics, is Bexar County’s new medical adviser on COVID-19.

Berggren, retained as a consultant at no cost to the county, told commissioners she will help develop best-known practices, based on the latest available data and documented successes in other local communities.

She urged local leaders and the public to take swift action to limit the spread of the coronavirus so local doctors are not forced to make difficult decisions in the weeks and months ahead on which patients to place on ventilators.

“That is a nightmare. We don’t want to be there. And if we value human life, we should do everything we can to prevent our community from getting to that point,” she said.

Bexar County Commissioners approved a 90-day extension of a declaration of a public health emergency signed March 13 by Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff. It now runs through June 15.
